Thanks to the 57 members of the Active Staff who voted in the 2011-2012 Program Board Election! All the ballots were valid.

The 2011-2012 MLW Program Board includes:

A Chair and Vice Chair of the Program Board/Program Committee will be selected by the Program Committee members at the first meeting held in early November.

The Program Board oversees MLW’s programming. The responsibilities of the Program Board include:interviewing and nominating program directors and other key personnel;recruiting new staff;recruiting delegates to attend the corporation’s programs;proposing a budget for the corporation’s programs;planning and implementing programs;developing,and proposing policies related directly to MLW’s programs;and overseeing accomplishment of corporate purposes related to the programs of MLW. The Board consists of five General members,one Special Member (an adult from the community) and two student members.

Maryland Students Complete Leadership Development Programs

Gaithersburg,MD (August 6,2011) — Maryland Leadership Workshops,Inc. (MLW),a non-profit organization dedicated to student leadership development,announced today that over 300 middle and high school students from across the State of Maryland graduated from its residential programs held at Washington College in Chesterown,MD and various regional outreach programs around the state during the summer inlcuding programs in Southern Maryland,Harford and Washington County.

During the week long program,students participate in workshops and activities designed to introduce concepts and apply them in a variety of settings. Students engage in reflective,interactive,creative and fun activities and emerge from MLW’s programs confident,inspired,motivated and empowered with the skills necessary for academic and leadership success. Workshop topics include:group dynamics,power and influence,project planning,goal setting and diversity.

Maryland Leadership Workshops’ programs are designed for both experienced student leaders and all those who show potential and interest to lead in their homes,schools,and communities. Through our proprietary leadership workshops using a peer teaching model,MLW empowers youth to exercise leadership today and to become our leaders of tomorrow.

In proud partnership with the Maryland State Department of Education,the Maryland Association of Student Councils and Leadership Maryland,MLW graduates become catalysts for bringing together and strengthening schools and communities throughout Maryland. Dr. Nancy Grasmick,the recently retired Maryland State Superintendent of schools,has remarked,“MLW,Maryland’s premier provider of leadership training,consistently empowers youth to exercise leadership within their schools and community and achieve success in all facets of their lives.”

SAIL is ON –Sunday,May 15,2011

We had to postpone this much-anticipated event last January due to weather. We hope many of you will be able to join us on Sunday,May 15,2011 at Hammond High School in Columbia,Maryland from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to relive the MLW magic.

Inaugural Meeting of Board of Directors

Maryland Leadership Workshops (MLW) is pleased to announce the installment of the new Board of Directors overseeing the mission and finances of this well-established non-profit organization.  In its first 56 years,this leadership training organization has served over 19,000 middle and high school students from across the State of Maryland during weeklong summer residential programs and community outreach programs throughout the year. 

The newly installed Board of Directors will promote the organization throughout the state,forge new partnerships and help secure new revenue streams to support student participation.  Representatives from the private,governmental and non-profit sectors as well as alumni and a current student serve on the Board and all have a personal connection to the organization.  The Board of Directors is chaired by Eliot Pfansteihl,himself a graduate of the program.

“This is an exciting and important development for our organization that has successfully existed to date thanks to the intense loyalty and involvement of those who know it best,” says Mr. Pfansteihl. “The new Board will allow us to grow and serve an increasingly diverse and talented pool of students throughout the state.”

Ron Dhindsa will continue to serve as President of the Program Board which runs the summer and community outreach programs.

Space is still available for all programs and interested persons are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.  Limited financial assistance may be available for students with demonstrated need. The week long programs are held at Washington College in Chestertown,Maryland and run from July 24 through August 6,2011.

2011 Journey Program is Full

Journey is a week-long residential leadership development program for rising 8th and 9th grade girls in Howard County supported by the Women’s Giving Circle of Howard County (WGC) and operated by Maryland Leadership Workshops. On August,13,2010,Southern Maryland Newspapers Online featured an article about the residential leadership program that MLW conducted for the Southern Maryland Youth Leadership Experience in June 2010.  The article highlights the overall program along with two marketing campaigns that the students created to deter young people from drug use and texting while driving.  Click here to view the article.
