Student Member –Board of Directors

The Executive Committee of the MLW Board of Directors is seeking a student to fill the role of Student Member on the governing body of the organization.  This is a voting position and requires attendance at the three meetings around the state of Maryland during the year (April,October,January).  The term,which begins in April,lasts one full year.

The application should be a current high school or post secondary school student who has familiarity with the programs of MLW.  High School students may be able to earn Student Service Learning hours for their service. Check with your SSL coordinator.

If you are interested in serving on the Board,please send a letter of interest outlining your experience with MLW,student leadership in general and why you would like to serve on this board.  Letters should be addressed to the Executive Committee and sent to the MLW Office,P.O. Box 83846,Gaithersburg,MD 20883.  Letters of interest should be received by March 1,2012. The executive committee will review applications and make a recommendation to the full Board which will vote by email so that the new student member can attend the April meeting.

2012 Program Brochure Available on line and in your mailbox

The 2012 MLW Program Brochure is now available online.  Hard copies were mailed to 2011 delegates and others interested in our programs.  If you got a brochure and already know about the program,be sure to share it with a friend,neighbor,classmate or other young person who would be interested in attending one of the core programs.  If you would like additional copies to distribute,please contact the office at 301-527-8222 or office@mlw.org. 2012 Staff Applications Available

For a great way to continue your own leadership experience, consider applying to staff an MLW Core Program (Middle School Experience in Leadership and Senior High Workshops).

Application forms are available at http://mdleadershipworkshops.org/programs/program-registration. Returning Staff applications are due February 1 and New Staff applications are due February 15,2012.  Please note that you are required to submit letters of recommendation so please do not wait until the last minute to apply!

SAIL is Set for January 7,2012

Do you wake up wishing you could start your morning by singing “Little Bunny Foo Foo”or the “Bubble-Gum Song”? Are you eager to check in with your fellow MLW delegates and staff members about your leadership challenges and successes over the months since last summer? Are you excited to participate in new and innovative teambuilding activities and games?

Join MLW staff and other 2011 delegates at SAIL,the MLW reunion for MSEL and SHW core programs being held this year on Saturday,January 7,2012 at James Hubert Blake High School in Silver Spring,Maryland (Montgomery County).

Core Program Dates –Summer 2012

Dates for MLW summer core programs are:

  • Middle School Experience in Leadership (MSEL) – Sunday,July 15 – Saturday,July 21, 2012
  • Senior High Workshops (SHW) – Sunday,July 22 – Saturday,July 28, 2012
  • Advanced Leadership Seminar – Sunday,July 15 – Saturday,July 21, 2012

 

If completed applications are received by May 1, 2012, tuition for MSEL and SHW is $575.  Regular tuition of $675 applies for applications received after May 1.

Tuition for ALS is $620.

Programs will be held on the campus of Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland. Tuition includes room and board for six nights and seven days, leadership materials, and access to college facilities.

2012 Program Leadership Announced

At the November 13,2011 meeting,the Program Committee elected a new Chair and Vice Chair to oversee the committee’s work.  Long-time staff members Marcy Leonard and Dustin Jeter were unanimously supported in taking on the task of keeping the Program Committee on track including hiring and appointing key leadership positions.

The Program Committee is pleased to announce the program leadership for the coming year.  Returning to direct ALS is Farah Sheikh. Also returning to co-direct MSEL are Kevin Tervala and Adam Carey.  New to a directing position,Candice Epps will direct the popular Journey program.  The Senior High Workshop position has not been filled yet.

Equally important are positions that support staff and further the organization’s vision of reaching as many students as possible.  DaShawn Murray returns as Staff Director overseeing the staff application process. Geoff Burgan has been appointed to the position of Staff Development Director to support training and development. Kori Jones is the Community Outreach Director who will help deliver tailored programs to clients throughout the year and all over the state of Maryland.

A Chair and Vice Chair of the Program Board/Program Committee will be selected by the Program Committee members at the first meeting held in early November.

The Program Board oversees MLW’s programming. The responsibilities of the Program Board include:interviewing and nominating program directors and other key personnel;recruiting new staff;recruiting delegates to attend the corporation’s programs;proposing a budget for the corporation’s programs;planning and implementing programs;developing,and proposing policies related directly to MLW’s programs;and overseeing accomplishment of corporate purposes related to the programs of MLW. The Board consists of five General members,one Special Member (an adult from the community) and two student members.

(MLW),a non-profit organization dedicated to student leadership development,announced today that over 300 middle and high school students from across the State of Maryland graduated from its residential programs held at Washington College in Chesterown,MD and various regional outreach programs around the state during the summer inlcuding programs in Southern Maryland,Harford and Washington County.

During the week long program,students participate in workshops and activities designed to introduce concepts and apply them in a variety of settings. Students engage in reflective,interactive,creative and fun activities and emerge from MLW’s programs confident,inspired,motivated and empowered with the skills necessary for academic and leadership success. Workshop topics include:group dynamics,power and influence,project planning,goal setting and diversity.
