Every year, many of our delegates are recruited and sponsored by schools, Boards of Education, and other community organizations. This adds to the diverse group of participants in each program. If you are interested in sponsoring students, please contact the MLW Office.

MLW has partnered with the Maryland Association of Student Councils (MASC) since its beginnings and continues to provide training at MASC and consulting services throughout the year.  Our partnerships have also expanded to include a successful collaboration with Leadership Maryland since 2004.

Over the years, MLW has received support from the Maryland State Department of Education and continues to receive a MSDE grant as part of the State-Aided Educational Institution program.

MLW programs are directly aligned with Common Core Standards and College and Career Readiness measurements. In particular, MLW programs engage students in the 8 Standards of Mathematical Practice and the 7 Capacities of Literate Individuals on a daily basis in various components of the program. Some examples include:

  • Workshops - students reason abstractly and look for and make use of structure (Mathematics Standards #2 and #7).
  • Group Activities - students come to understand other perspectives and cultures and use appropriate tools strategically (ELA Capacity #7 and Mathematics Standard #5).
  • Practicum Planning and Implementation - students demonstrate independence, use technology and digital media strategically and capably, make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, and construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others (ELA Capacities #1 and #7; Mathematics Standards #1 and #3).

As students learn to apply these Common Core Standards and Capacities in authentic, hands-on experiences, they become better prepared to engage with the rigor of Advanced Placement courses in their junior and senior years of high school as well as for the challenges of a competitive four-year college or university upon their high school graduation.

Make Your Contribution

As a non-profit organization, MLW relies on donations from individuals, corporations and foundations to provide our programs at a below market cost so that any student may attend regardless of ability to pay the tuition. Your donation provides scholarship support so that more students experience the MLW magic.
